2004
British championship round 4
Frank Hooper
25/04/04
The early pace in the expert class was set by Robin & Gill Morewood by cleaning the first 2 groups. Robin Luscombe/Les Ashby were already on 4 after a 3 in the 1st group Bramdon Barns and a slack dab in the 2nd. But a 3 to Luskys 1 in the 4th group Silvington Wood reduced Morewoods lead to just 2 at the punch card change. Both crews matched each other up to the next real tester section 27 where a 2 to Morewoods 5 gave the lead to Robin & Les, Bernie Chambers/Helen Allaway, Kevin Morley/Ben Dickson & the Radfords all managed to get through here for a single dab. Luscombe/Ashby then cleaned the remaining 11 sections and with Robin & Gill adding a further 2 they were destined for 2nd best on the day. The battle for third & fourth was just as close with Steve & Harvey getting the nod over Kevin & Ben by 3 after time penalties came into play, as a storming ride by Morley/Dickson saw them pip the Radfords by 2 on observation. The off form Cuckows slipping into 6th.
A
Closely fought battle in the clubmans class was won by Hawkins/Sparkes from
the Pickard brothers with the Crabtrees in third, Treagus/Pocock slipping
into 7th behind the ever improving Haighs & G Foulger/P Cain. This now
makes the Pickards & Hawkins/Sparkes joint leaders in the overall
standings. Early pace setters along with the Pickards were Flowers/Smith
who were forced to retire after boiling the Gas Gas, making for a long push
home to the Isle of Man.
(If any of the clubman class would like to send in a more detailed report
please email)
The South Birmingham MC would like to thank all Landowners, Officials, Observers and any others who helped to make this trial possible and all of the competitors for their support.
