Despite a terrible weather forecast 11 outfits signed on for the 1st round of the SMCC club championship. Due to the dire weather warning the trial was set up entirely in Arrasey Plantation and not split between Carnagrie and Arrasey as planned to at least offer some protection to the faithful observers. The weather of course was unpredictable as ever and turned out to be pleasant even with some sunshine.
Three laps of 8 sections were set out for each class, in the experts there was nothing to choose between the top three crews at the halfway mark with Flowers and Smith 1 point ahead of Teare and Birchall who in turn were 2 point clear of Kelly and Baxter. The second half of the trial showed Teare and Birchall pulling away from the other crews to win by a comfortable margin., Smith and Molyneux improved in the second half to slot into 3rd place.
The clubman class was closely contested with McNee and Swan showing a rapid improvement by leading the more experienced crews by 1 point at the halfway mark and extending that lead in the latter half of the trial to 6 points. Dave and Kath Bingham made a welcome re-appearance to the sport on Gerry Hanny's borowed Beta.
The club wishes to thank observers, tenants and DAFF for the use of land.
